Inflammatory form of OA that affects postmenopausal middle aged women

Often limited to the hands, especially PIP and DIP, and 1st carpometacarpal and STT joints

Gull wing appearance

  • –Central erosions, unlike other processes which are marginal
  • –Osteophytes at margins

Ankylosis of IP joints is a feature which does not occur in routine OA

Osteopenia is also a distinct feature

Soft tissue swelling is common

15% go on to develop rheumatoid arthritis
